Marble, Travertine, Onyx: A Guide to Natural Stone Types
A short guide to the stone families we develop products in, and what each brings to form, colour and surface.
Different stone families bring different qualities to a product. The notes below describe how each is used in the objects we develop.
Marble
Marble carries colour and vein across a face, so it suits forms where a broad surface shows the pattern. Discuss colour, grain, pores and finish, and the geometry of the piece. Actual block or slab selection follows the design review.
Travertine
Travertine is a material direction for home accessories and bespoke objects such as trays, bowls, vases, candle holders, bookends and bathroom accessory sets. Choose the desired grain direction and pore appearance, and agree a filled or unfilled treatment with a finished reference sample.
Onyx and Crystalline Materials
Onyx and crystalline materials can explore colour and translucency where suitable, for example in components that play with light. The exact material and its compatibility with the construction are confirmed for each order.
Special Mineral Materials
Malachite and other agreed materials can support bespoke objects and gifts, such as a commissioned board combining malachite and white crystal. Composition and construction must be specified clearly.
Agreeing the Material
For each order, the actual material identity, lot, construction and finish are agreed. Natural colour and pattern become part of the product, and a sample sets the standard without promising identical markings.
