Case Study: A Commissioned Malachite and White Crystal Chess Set
How a single-set commission combined two materials in one object, from material pairing to presentation packaging.
A commissioned chess set shows how a bespoke object can be developed around a single occasion, combining two materials in one piece.
The Materials
The board combines malachite and white crystal, and the two sets of chess pieces use the corresponding materials. Pairing materials this way puts the stone itself at the centre of the design.
The Commission
This was a single set, made with particular attention to fabrication details and high-end presentation packaging. As a one-off, the scope followed material availability and fabrication review rather than a repeating production line.
Your Own Commission
Material pairing, piece profiles, board dimensions and presentation can be developed around your brief. The scope follows material availability and fabrication review, and the agreed construction is recorded before sampling.
A Single Object or a Collection
The design, stone and production method determine the order plan. A unique gift, special object or prototype can be discussed with a clearly defined development scope, while repeated products use an approved form, material range, inspection standard and packaging.
